Textual Economy Through Close Coupling Of Syntax And Semantics
نویسندگان
چکیده
We focus on the production of efficient descriptions of objects, actions and events. We define a type of efficiency, textual economy, that exploits the hearer's recognition of inferential links to material elsewhere within a sentence. Textual economy leads to efficient descriptions because the material that supports such inferences has been included to satisfy independent communicative goals, and is therefore overloaded in the sense of Pollack [18]. We argue that achieving textual economy imposes strong requirements on the representation and reasoning used in generating sentences. • The representation must support the generator's simultaneous consideration of syntax and semantics. Reasoningmust enable the generator to assess quickly and reliably at any stage how the hearer will interpret the current sentence, with its -(inc0mplete)syntax,andsemantics. We show that these representational and reasoning requirements are met in the SPUD system for sentence planning and realization.

Reverse Engineering of Network Software Binary Codes for Identification of Syntax and Semantics of Protocol Messages
Reverse engineering of network applications especially from the security point of view is of high importance and interest. Many network applications use proprietary protocols which specifications are not publicly available. Reverse engineering of such applications could provide us with vital information to understand their embedded unknown protocols. This could facilitate many tasks including d...
متن کاملVisual Semantics - Or: What You See is What You Compute
We introduce visual graphs as an intermediate representation between concrete visual syntax and abstract graph syntax. In a visual graph some nodes are shown as geometric figures, and some edges are represented by geometric relationships between these figures. By carefully designing visual graphs and corresponding mappings to abstract syntax graphs, semantics definitions can, at least partially...
متن کاملElementary Patterns for Converting Textual and Visual Formalisms based on Set Theory and ORM
AbstrAct: Textual formalisms, visual formalisms, or both types of formalisms can be used to develop a formal model. The exact syntax and semantics of textual formalisms reduce ambiguity and increase formulation precision. This has as side effect that textual formalisms can become complex and suitable for limited audiences only. Visual formalisms consist of graphical notations with formal semant...
متن کاملVisual Syntax
We propose a separation of visual syntax into concrete and abstract syntax, much like it is often done for textual languages. Here the focus is on visual programming languages; the impact on visual languages in general is not clear by now. We suggest to use unstructured labeled multi-graphs as abstract visual syntax and show how this facilitates semantics definitions and transformations of visu...
متن کاملSyntactic/Semantic Structures for Textual Entailment Recognition
In this paper, we describe an approach based on off-the-shelf parsers and semantic resources for the Recognizing Textual Entailment (RTE) challenge that can be generally applied to any domain. Syntax is exploited by means of tree kernels whereas lexical semantics is derived from heterogeneous resources, e.g. WordNet or distributional semantics through Wikipedia. The joint syntactic/semantic mod...
